THE MEANING OF SACRIFICE

O Sovereign Lord, Creator of all things,
because You are what You are
and I am little I,
therefore should I offer sacrifice to You.
No act or offering short of sacrifice
can express my obligations and my duties
or Your rights over me.
No other act can be so rich in meaning,
none so much my own and so complete;
therefore sacrifice is due from me to You.
It is the best, the highest act I can perform,
and my whole nature, my full self is in it,
therefore it is reserved to You alone.
Sacrifice is Yours, my God. and Yours exclusively
because it rises from my deepest self,
pervades, affects me through and through,
involving all the substance of my soul
in absolute surrender unto You.
To others I may give mere parts
or fragments of myself, words, deeds, affections, thoughts,
and only unto You my total self, my all,
because You alone are God.
But
when I think
how good and wonderful are Your works,
O Lord God Almighty,
how just, how high, how holy
are all Your ways,
how exalted Your nature, how infinite Your power,
and how I am
but dust and ashes, frail and weak,
wayward and worn with sin,
I dare not hold up to heaven and offer to You
so poor, so spoilt a thing as I.
Therefore I turn to that divine love
Which opened wide its arms to me on Calvary,
and still holds them open in the Mass,
to Your beloved Son, my Mediator, I turn,
to Him who drew me and took me to Himself upon the Cross
and made me His,
blending and mingling as water with ruddy wine
my poor life with His own,
so that together we two are one.
To Him I turn, in Him I trust, with Him I stand identified.
Look then upon Him, and me in Him
and not on me apart.
See His worth, not my demerit,
see His goodness, not my sin,
see His perfection, not my deficiency
and accept from me through Him and with Him
the oblation of myself. Amen.
